Tunnel to Towers 5K raises record $75,000 to support heroes and their families

FORT MYERS, Fla. - eTravelWire -- A record of nearly 1,000 participants took part in the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk at Florida SouthWestern State College on Sept. 12. The event, which benefits first responders and military personnel, also raised a record $75,000.

The 5K Run & Walk supports the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which was founded in honor of the late Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter who lost his life while fighting to save others in the World Trade Center tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.

In addition to the 5K race, a concrete and steel piece of the World Trade Center along with a fire truck destroyed in the 9/11 attack were on display at the event. A ceremony featuring bagpipers preceded the 5K.
