Little Edo
More on eTravel Wire
With its quaint, historical atmosphere, Kawagoe is still today known as Koedo, which means Little Edo. (Edo is the former name for Tokyo from Japan's samurai days). Popular cultural sites in the vicinity of the hotel include the Yamazaki Art Museum and the Hattori Folk Museum as well as Kawagoehachimangu Shrine and Renkeiji Temple. Most compelling for families is Candy Alley, just 1.4 miles from the hotel, where traditional candies are made and sold.
Confectionary is a Local Treat
Kawagoe is famous in Japan for a treat made from sweet potatoes. Here are some particularly photogenic treats.
*Sweet potato chips from Koedo Osatsuan (https://bit.ly/384mKai): Both delicious and attractive, they are arranged like a vase of flowers.
*Koi (love) soft serve ice cream from Kashoumon's Toki no Kane branch (https://bit.ly/2qufdRk). The flavorful purple sweet potato ice cream goes perfectly with a heart-shaped monaka, a Japanese bean paste snack.
