SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 18, 2024 ~ Letterform Archive Books is excited to announce the release of Citizen Printer, a comprehensive monograph showcasing the work of renowned letterpress artist Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. This highly anticipated trade publication features over 800 reproductions of Kennedy's vibrant and impactful posters, handbills, maps, and artist's books from his 35-year career.
The book draws from Letterform Archive's extensive collection of Kennedy's work, which was generously donated in 2020. This archive includes some of his most iconic pieces, such as the Quotations of Rosa Louise Parks portfolio (2015) and the infamous Ladies, No Fighting in the Bathroom poster (2003). It also features rarely seen early works like Strange Fruit (1994), Riddle Ma Riddle (1996), and Mask (2000).
Readers will be immersed in Kennedy's world through colorful reproductions that capture the essence of his printshop. The book also includes illuminating texts that place his work within the historical context of abolitionist printing. A special series of process prints commissioned for this publication showcases Kennedy's unique "imperfectionist" approach to his craft. Original portraits of the artist at work add a personal touch to this tribute.

Citizen Printer is encased in chipboard covers reminiscent of Kennedy's humble print materials, with a pop of his signature pink along the edges. It is not only a playful homage to one of America's most exuberant makers but also a serious exploration of his impact on the art world.
The book features a powerful artist manifesto written by Kennedy himself and a foreword by New York Times bestselling author Austin Kleon. American studies scholar Myron M. Beasley provides a biography of Kennedy while design educator Kelly Walters offers an overview of Black protest in print. Award-winning designers Gail Anderson and Joe Newton have created a type-forward design for this publication.
For those interested in learning more about Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. and his work, interviews can be scheduled by contacting Katie Peeler at 415.223.2283. Review copies are also available upon request.
