With less noise made by divers and boats, the reefs of Cozumel now have more fish, especially the larger pelagic species. Divers have never had a better reason to dive Cozumel than right now.
COZUMEL, Mexico - eTravelWire -- Every diver knows that Cozumel is among the world's top dive destinations if not the best. The incredible clarity of the water, the abundant marine life, the huge coral formations, a wide variety of dive locations, the warm water and the ease of a drift dive make diving on this Mexican Caribbean island fantastic and extremely appealing to novice and experienced divers alike. But now, if you can believe it, it's gotten even better and more attractive.
In October of 2019, as part of a reef conservation program, the larger reefs of Palancar and Colombia were temporarily off-limits to scuba divers and tourism in general. Then came the pandemic which shut down diving in all of Cozumel's reefs. Palancar and Colombia reefs have now recently opened and are teaming with greater numbers of marine life, especially the larger pelagic species. This is due to considerably less noise in the water says Brenda Hernandez, Deputy Director at Cozumel Reef National Park (CONANP).

Cozumel is best known for having the largest coral formations in the Caribbean, environmental protection that is vigilant through the authority of the National Reefs Park, and its incredibly common fauna such as the green moray eel, five species of sea turtles and spotted eagle rays.
Every major resort and hotel on the island have a dive shop on premise to easily and comfortably book your diving. The Cozumel Hotel Association's website, www.IslaCozumelResorts.com has a complete list of major resorts and hotels.
If you book now, before the waters get "noisy" again, you'll have a chance to see greater fauna. As an added bonus to divers, the Spotted Eagle Ray season is now through March when large schools can be seen during these months.
Your health and safety first. All of Cozumel's Hotel Association member are earned the Safe Travels Certificate as well as the dive operators associated with each hotel.
